Case 4 Accessibility & Usability

Don’t make me think review:

One of the things that I learned while reading Don’t Make me Think was that simplicity is the key. One of the examples that is given is to make sure that everything is simplified so that customers don’t have to waste time thinking things over. A great example would be links. There is no point in using big words or hiding what is behind door number one. Just tell the user what they’ll get if they click on the link. Use your best judgment on word usage according to your audience.
Another idea that is addressed is the use of breadcrumbs. This is a great idea so that visitors know where they are and where they’ve been. I plan on incorporating such a method in a few weeks when I have my website more developed.

Accessibility & Expectations:

1.1- I took the header image and added an alternative text that can be seen if the images are disabled on the website or even by right-clicking on the images and viewing the image properties.
1.3- I added in h1 headings into the appropriate place on the existing pages.  I made sure in my Case 3 tables that I a table heading in the top row as well as the first column.
1.4-I learned that the text should be a reasonable size so that when it is doubled in size that those that may have a hard time reading will be able to see it, I believe that I have achieved the task.
2.1- I have learned that sometimes the mouse isn’t as important as some people rely on it, so keyboard access to my website should be a priority.  I have incorporated this with tabindex in my comments page.
2.4- I have modified page to be descriptive in the title so that when a person clicks on the page.  A site map has also been added to the footer.
3.1- The language was already established as English.
3.2- Website maintains same layout throughout so visitors won’t become confused or disoriented.
3.3- Everything on the websites is clearly identified so that people can easily understand the content.
4.1- I checked and fixed my doctype error that was verified through http://validator.w3.org/
